Carpet Beetle Removal Tips

Carpet beetle removal is an extremely common but little know Oregon pest problem. Here are a few tips to help you determine if you have a carpet beetle infestation and decide exactly what to do to combat the issue quickly.

What do they look like?

Carpet beetles have two different life stages that look completely different. The larval stage looks like a very small, fuzzy caterpillar. Larval stage carpet beetles are only about 1/8 inch long. The adult stage insects are also very small (generally smaller than an apple seed) and have distinct spots on their back.

Do carpet beetles bite?

We regularly get requests for bed bug inspections only to discover that carpet beetles are the actual pest causing skin irritations. Without a trained eye, it’s actually very easy to incorrectly diagnose bed bugs when carpet beetles are the pest afflicting homeowners.

Identifying the pest species based on appearance of bites on the skin often leads to incorrect conclusions. We recommend instead, locating the pest first so an appropriate treatment can be completed. This process helps ensure pests are eliminated quickly and successfully.

Skin irritation for people is generally not caused by biting carpet beetles.  Irritation to the skin is actually caused by the sharp hairs on and left by the larvae.
